DUNLUCE CASTLE

DUNLUCE CASTLE

Almost surrounded by the sea, Dunluce Castle clings precariously to a basalt crag. Built in the early 1300s by Richard de Burgo, the Red Earl of Ulster, it became the stronghold of the MacDonnells after it was seized from the O'Neills in 1567. The castle was abandoned after a storm washed part of it into the sea in 1639.
