The world renowned Belleek Pottery was founded in 1857 by John Caldwell, a farmer who was more interested in ceramics. He noticed the sparkling white finish on the walls of his estate cottages; he surveyed the land and found the felspar and kaolin needed to make pottery. Belleeks fame soon spread, helped when Queen Victoria presented a Belleek tea service to the German royal family
